Frequently Asked Questions

How can physical therapy help me?

Orthopedic physical therapists diagnose, manage, and treat disorders and injuries of the musculoskeletal system as well as rehabilitate patients after orthopedic surgery. Orthopedic therapists are trained in the treatment of post operative joints, sports injuries, arthritis, and neck or back pain just to name a few. Those who have suffered injury or disease affecting the muscles, bones, ligaments or tendons of the body will benefit from assessment by an orthopedic physical therapist.

What kind of education does a physical therapist have?

Physical therapists are licensed health care professionals. Prior to practicing they must obtain a Master and/or Doctorate of Physical Therapy from an accredited education program and pass their state board exams to be licensed. They have extensive training in anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, neurological sciences, disease and injury pathophysiology. In addition, physical therapists attend continuing education courses to stay abreast of the latest medical developments and treatment approaches.

Physical therapists who are members of APTA are bound by the Association’s Code of Ethics and are especially committed to providing competent and compassionate care.

Do I need a referral for physical therapy?

In Ohio, you are now permitted to be evaluated and treated by a licensed physical therapist without a physician’s referral. Although direct access to physical therapy is now allowed, some insurance companies including Medicare will not cover your physical therapy without a physician’s referral. Once you receive a referral to physical therapy, it is your right as a patient to choose the physical therapist who will provide your care.

Will my insurance cover physical therapy?

What should I expect at my first appointment?

Your first visit will include an evaluation by your physical therapist to identify current and potential problems. Based on the results of the examination, and considering your specific goals, your physical therapist will design a plan of care to restore function and relieve pain. Each person’s situation is unique and your care plan will be set up just for you. Treatment will consist of a variety of hands-on joint and soft tissue treatment techniques, exercises and pain reducing modalities. At an appropriate time, even as early as your first visit, you will be prescribed a home exercise program to speed recovery and you will be educated in ways to prevent further problems.

Please plan on your first visit lasting an hour to an hour and a half. Each subsequent visit will last approximately one hour.
